I am trying to calculate the values of the concentration parameters (kappa) for a Von Mises mixture model. I currently have some R code that gives me optimised values for kappa. However, I do not understand the results that I am getting: a. I have got negative values of kappa which I do not understand how this is possible or why values of kappa would be negative. Also, the code that I need to use kappa in will not accept negative values. b. I have values of kappa that are as high as 36; I did not expect kappa to be greater than about 8.
