Summary:
Applying non existing textures causes R.app to abruptly end.

Detailed description
A similar issue has been in the R-sig.mac list related to applying a texture in a non expanded directory (i.e. ~/myfile.png). The same happens to my pointing to a non existing file when applying the texture.
in R.app
rgl.bg(sphere=TRUE, texture=/"textures/sunsleep.png")
rgl.bg(sphere=TRUE, texture="/Users/myuser/textures/sunsleep.png")
both will end R.app without notice,
whether both send a warning:
Warning message:
In rgl.material(color = color, back = back, ...) :
RGL: Pixmap load: unable to open file 'textures/sunsleep.png' for reading
