Do not install raster via
install.packages("raster", repos="http://R-Forge.R-project.org";)
if you do not use R version 2.8 or later.
If you use R 2.7 you will an obsolete version.

If you build and install via R CMD, there is a dependency on R >= 2.8 (due to changes in the Methods package, I think)
